How to Help Your Child Prepare for Their First Robotics Competition

Your child comes home with a robotics kit, a team assignment, and a competition date circled on the calendar, and for the next several weeks, every family conversation about it is about the robot: does it grip the object, does it cross the line, does it complete the mission in time. That's a reasonable place to put the energy. It's also not where a large share of the actual competition happens.

Most first-time robotics families don't realize that a real event isn't only the robot running its course on the field. In FIRST LEGO League and VEX Robotics Competition, two of the most widely used team robotics programs in US schools, a panel of judges also sits down with the team and asks them to explain, out loud, what they built and why. That interview isn't a formality tacked onto the robot's run. It often counts for as much of what a team walks away with as the robot's actual performance does.

That comes as a surprise to a lot of families who spent the weeks before competition almost entirely in the garage, tightening wheels and rewriting code, and never once rehearsed answering "walk us through your design process" out loud to someone who wasn't already in the room while it happened.

Why the Robot Isn't the Whole Score

In FIRST LEGO League Challenge, the division built for students in grades 4 through 8, FIRST weighs a team's overall recognition across four areas, split roughly evenly: Core Values, Robot Design, the Innovation Project, and the Robot Game itself, according to FIRST LEGO League's own judging materials. Three of those four areas, Core Values, Robot Design, and the Innovation Project, are scored entirely through live interviews with a judging panel, not through anything the robot does on the field. A team can build a robot that runs its mission cleanly and still walk away without recognition if nobody on the team can explain, clearly and specifically, what problem their Innovation Project addressed or why they chose one sensor over another.

VEX Robotics Competition runs on a similar logic. A Team Interview, typically ten to fifteen minutes with a panel of judges, asks students to explain their robot's design and their strategy for using it, and the notes judges take in that interview feed directly into award decisions. The Design Award, one of VEX's core judged awards, is built from exactly two things: the team's engineering notebook and that judges' interview, not from where the robot places in matches. Even the Excellence Award, the top honor at most events, layers judged criteria on top of a strong on-field record rather than replacing it.

The pattern across both programs is the same. A robotics competition isn't only asking whether the robot works. It's asking whether the students who built it can explain how it works, why they made the choices they made, and what they'd do differently, to an adult they've never met, on the spot, without their code or their notebook open in front of them.

What Not to Do Before Competition Day

Don't let the robot eat all the prep time. Build and code time is real, necessary work, but it's also the part of prep that's easiest to lose hours in without noticing, because there's always one more adjustment to make. If the interview never gets a rehearsal slot on the calendar, it won't get one by accident.

Don't hand the whole interview to your most talkative kid. Judges are specifically trained to ask questions across the team, not just to whoever answers first, and a team where only one member can speak to the robot's design reads as a team where only one member actually understood it. Every teammate needs to be able to explain their own piece.

Don't let the team memorize a script. A rehearsed paragraph about "our design process" falls apart the moment a judge asks a follow-up that doesn't match the script, and judges' follow-up questions are the whole point of an interview format instead of a presentation format. Kids need to know their project well enough to talk about it, not recite it.

Don't let a "lead builder" be the only one who understands the whole robot. It's common for one kid to gravitate toward the mechanical build and another toward the code, and that specialization is fine, as long as every team member can still describe what the other parts of the robot do and why they exist. A judge who asks the coder to explain the gripper shouldn't get silence.

Don't skip a mock interview because "we already know what we did." Knowing what you did and being able to explain it clearly to a stranger, under a little time pressure, are two different skills, and the gap between them is exactly what shows up on competition day if it's never been tested beforehand.

What Actually Helps

1. Assign each judged area to specific teammates ahead of time. Decide, as a team, who's the primary voice on the Innovation Project, who covers the robot's mechanical design, and who covers the code, so every judge's question has a teammate ready to take it rather than a group looking at each other.

2. Run a live mock interview with someone the kids don't know well. A parent, a sibling's friend, another coach, anyone outside the team who can ask genuine questions works better than a family member who already knows the answers and unconsciously softens the questions.

3. Practice explaining a failure, not just a success. Judges frequently ask what didn't work and what the team changed because of it, and a team that has only rehearsed the version where everything went right gets caught flat by that question. Pick one real setback from the build process and have the team practice walking through it out loud.

4. Anchor every answer in "why," not just "what." "We used a four-bar linkage" is a fact. "We used a four-bar linkage because it kept the arm parallel to the ground through its full range of motion, which our first design didn't do" is an answer that shows understanding. Judges are listening for the second version.

5. Rehearse standing up, away from the robot and the laptop. It's tempting to practice the explanation while pointing at the robot on the table, but the interview happens with judges asking direct questions, not with the team giving a guided tour. Practicing the same content without props gets closer to how the real conversation will feel.

6. Make sure every teammate answers at least one question out loud in every practice round. Rotate who starts, rotate who gets asked the hardest question, and don't let the same one or two kids field everything in rehearsal, because that's exactly the pattern that shows up in the real interview if it isn't broken first.

The Three Questions Every Judge Comes Back To

Across both programs, judges' questions tend to cluster around the same three things, whatever the specific wording. 1. What problem were you solving, and why did you solve it that way? This is the design-rationale question, and it's asking for reasoning, not just a description of the final robot.

3. What didn't work, and what did you learn from it? This is the reflection question, and it's often the one first-time teams are least prepared for, because most of the prep time goes toward describing what succeeded.
