TalkMaze is hiring coaches

Get paid to help a student find their voice.

If you loved speech, debate, or teaching, you already have most of what this job needs. You coach students one-on-one over video, help them get clearer and more confident, and get paid for it. It is remote, and you set your own hours.

Who this is for

You might be a great fit.

We prefer at least a year of coaching or teaching experience. Beyond that, we look for people who enjoy this and are great with students.

  • You did debate, Model UN, forensics, mock trial, or theatre, and you still miss it a little.
  • You are the friend people ask to look over an essay or help them prepare a talk.
  • You like explaining things, and you are patient when it takes someone a few tries.
  • You are good with students and enjoy helping a shy one open up.
  • You want a job that fits around the rest of your life.

A week in the job

One student at a time.

There is no class to manage. You meet one student over video each week and help them improve. Here is how a session usually goes.

  1. 01

    Meet your students

The same few students come back to you each week, 40 minutes each, one at a time. You get to know them and they get comfortable with you.

  2. 02

Get a plan before every class

Before each session we give you a short brief: where your child is and what to work on that day. You do not have to plan a lesson from scratch.

  3. 03

    Run the session

Give them a topic, let them try it, then show them how to make it stronger. Do a quick example, then let them do most of the talking.

  4. 04

    Give clear feedback

Tell them what worked and one thing to try next, so they finish the session knowing what they improved.

  5. 05

    Watch them grow

A student who was too nervous to read aloud in week one can be leading a debate a couple of months later.

What you get

A student job worth having.

Good pay

$18 to $30 an hour, depending on your experience.

Flexible hours

You set your availability. Take on more when you have time and less when you are busy. Students book into the times you offer.

Fully remote

Work from anywhere with a stable connection and a quiet place to talk.

Real experience

You get trained in our coaching method and build a track record of students you have helped, which is worth having on a resume or grad school application.

We train you

You bring the coaching or teaching experience, and we train you on our method. We watch you coach before you start with real students.

Real support

You will have people to ask for help, feedback to help you improve, and work that feels worthwhile.

Every student has something to say. A lot of them just never had someone to help them say it. That can be you.

TalkMaze is an online academy where students learn public speaking and debate one on one, built on a method you will be trained on.

Getting started

How hiring works

The process is short, and you get useful feedback on your coaching either way.

01

Apply

Tell us about yourself and why you want to coach. It takes about five minutes.

02

Talk with us

A short video call so we can get to know each other and you can ask questions.

03

Try a practice lesson

You run a short practice session and we give you feedback on it.

04

Get matched

Once you are trained on the method, we match you with your first students.

Questions

Questions you might have

How much experience do I need?

We prefer at least a year of coaching or teaching experience. If you have that along with a background in speech, debate, or a related area, we would love to hear from you. We train every coach on our method before they start.

Do I need to be good at both debate and public speaking?

No. Tell us where you are strongest. Coaches come from debate, theatre, teaching, Model UN, or just being a clear, confident communicator.

Will this fit around my schedule?

Yes. You set your availability, students book into those times each week, and you can take on more or less as your schedule changes.

How many hours can I work?

As many or as few as you want. Some coaches do a few sessions a week, others do many more.

Where are the students, and what hours do they need?

Students are all over the world, so after-school and weekend times are the most useful. You are only matched with hours you have offered.

Is it fully remote?

Yes. Every session happens over live video.
