A child who twists their hair only during presentations and sits still through a movie or a meal is showing a normal, situational stress response. 1. Give the hands a specific, content-connected job. That crowds out the aimless movement because there's no leftover attention for it to run on.
2. Rehearse one home-base position until it's automatic. Whether that's notecards held at waist height or hands resting loosely at the sides, the goal is a default position practiced so many times in low-stakes settings that it stops being a decision under pressure. A position a child has to actively choose mid-speech is a position that will lose out to nerves.
3. Burn off some of the nervous energy before speaking, not during.
