Buyer’s guide
The Best Private Debate Coaching for Students Who Compete
Six real options for 1-on-1 debate coaching and tournament prep, compared on the things that decide a season: who the coach is, whether prep follows the live resolution, how much you commit up front, and what it costs. TalkMaze is ours, and we say so.
Your student made the debate team, or is about to. They have a tournament on the calendar, a case that keeps losing on the same argument, and a team coach who is splitting attention across twenty other debaters. That is usually the moment a family starts searching for a private debate coach.
This guide is for that moment. Our broader list of online debate classes covers first experiences of debate, group clubs and sampling. This one is narrower: 1-on-1 coaching for students who already compete or are about to, in Public Forum (PF), Lincoln-Douglas (LD), Policy, World Schools, Parliamentary or Congress. The questions are different here. Will the coach know my student’s format? Will sessions follow the resolution they are debating this month? How much do I have to buy before the first session?
The same rules apply as in every TalkMaze buyer’s guide. We state only facts each provider publishes about itself, we quote a price only where it is listed, and every pick gets a tradeoff and a "who it is wrong for." TalkMaze runs a private debate coaching program, it is ranked here, and it is labeled as ours.
The best private debate coach is the one who knows your student’s format, preps against the live topic, and gives your student every minute of the session. Every pick below is judged on those three things, plus how much commitment and cost it asks for up front.
TalkMaze — best for most competing debaters who want one private coach, matched to their format, tied to the live topic, starting with a free 1-on-1 session
- Best for national-circuit LD and PF: DebateDrills
- Best fixed block of hours from camp faculty: NSD private tutoring
- Best team-plus-coach season package: The Argument Institute
- Best for choosing an individual coach by profile and rate: Wyzant
How we picked
- Private 1-on-1 coaching is available. Group-only clubs and summer camps are out of the ranked list, with a short note on camps at the end.
- Built for competitive debate formats. We checked which formats each provider names on its own site (PF, LD, Policy, World Schools, Parliamentary, Congress).
- Prep tied to the live topic. NSDA changes Public Forum and Lincoln-Douglas resolutions through the season, so coaching that ignores the current topic loses value fast.
- Coach matching and continuity. Who the coach is, how they are chosen, and whether your student keeps the same one.
- Commitment and transparency. Whether there is a free first session or consultation, the minimum purchase, and whether pricing is published. Where it is not, we say "not public."
- Only publicly verifiable facts. Tournament results quoted by providers are self-reported, and we label them that way. No invented ratings.
- Full disclosure. TalkMaze is our own program and is held to the same criteria.

The programs, ranked
1-on-1 coaching
TalkMaze
Best for: Students on a school or club debate team, or about to join one, who want one private coach matched to their format and prep tied to the motions they are debating this season.
TalkMaze runs private 1-on-1 debate coaching online for students already competing on their school’s debate team or about to join one. It coaches every major style (World Schools, Public Forum, Parliamentary, Lincoln-Douglas, British Parliamentary, Congressional Debate and Policy, plus spar and impromptu), and matches your student with a coach who knows the format their school or league runs. Sessions are tied to the live resolutions and motions on your student’s circuit, and your student keeps a consistent coach who knows their goals and progress.
It is our top pick for most competing families because it removes the two biggest risks of hiring a private coach: paying for hours before you know the fit, and getting a coach who drills a generic format. The first step is a free 30-minute 1-on-1 session with no credit card, in which your student debates, gets questioned and leaves with specific feedback. Where we are the wrong call: a student who wants a team to travel and compete with should look at a club model like DebateDrills or The Argument Institute, because TalkMaze students compete through their own school or club team, which handles tournaments and registration.
Strengths
- Coaches every major format and matches the coach to the one your student competes in
- Sessions follow the live resolutions and motions on your student’s circuit
- Consistent coach across the season, so feedback builds on last week
- Free 30-minute 1-on-1 first session, no credit card, before you buy anything
- Debate coaching sits alongside public speaking coaching, so delivery is coached as seriously as case work
Tradeoffs
- No tournament travel, registration or team; your student competes through their own school or club team
- No shared team evidence library or backfiles of the kind club programs bundle in
- No separate debate price list; debate runs on the standard TalkMaze membership, so you compare it on the pricing page
- Does not publish a tournament results page, so you judge the coaching from the free session
Format: 1-on-1 online; aimed at students on or joining a debate team
Pricing: Free first session; membership rates published at talkmaze.com/pricing
Competitive circuit
DebateDrills
Best for: Middle and high schoolers chasing national-circuit results in Lincoln-Douglas or Public Forum, whose family is ready for a subscription.
DebateDrills, founded in 2015 by Paras Kumar, is the most specialized national-circuit option here. Its private tutoring covers LD, PF, Policy, World Schools, Congress, Extemp and Speech, with three published tutor tiers: Associate at $90, Lead at $120 and Expert at $150 per session, sold as monthly four-hour subscriptions ($360, $480 or $600), and the founder at $300 per session with a 10-hour minimum. It also runs season-long club teams for grades 7 to 12.
The tradeoffs are commitment and fit. Its tutoring page states plainly that it does not offer trials or pay-as-you-go tutoring, so the first purchase is a subscription after a free consultation call. Its results are self-reported. For a first- or second-year debater who needs fundamentals and confidence before bids, it is more program than the goal requires. Our DebateDrills review has the full detail.
Strengths
- Deep national-circuit focus, strongest in LD and PF
- Published, tiered rates so you can match budget to coach seniority
- Club teams add positions, backfiles and tournament support for grades 7 to 12
- Free consultation call before you buy
Tradeoffs
- No trial sessions and no pay-as-you-go; tutoring is a subscription
- Built for tournament-bound students, heavy for a newer debater
- Tournament results are self-reported on its own site
- Club teams are a separate, larger annual commitment
Format: 1-on-1 online tutoring; club teams grades 7 to 12
Pricing: $90 / $120 / $150 per session by tier, sold as 4-hour monthly subscriptions; founder $300 (published)
Hour packages
NSD private tutoring
Best for: LD and PF debaters whose family prefers to buy a fixed block of hours from a summer-camp faculty pool.
The National Symposium for Debate (NSD) is best known for summer camps, and it also sells year-round private tutoring online over Zoom. Its tutoring page names Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum, says tutors are drawn from its summer faculty, and publishes two packages: 5 hours for $1,000 and 10 hours for $1,800, each paid at registration and each including access to its Skill Builder program. A free consultation is offered first.
The model is simple and transparent, which is its strength. The limits are cost per hour (the 5-hour package works out to $200 an hour) and scope: the named formats are LD and PF, so a World Schools, Parliamentary or Congress debater should confirm a coach is available for their event before paying.
Strengths
- Published package prices
- Tutors drawn from NSD’s summer camp faculty
- Includes access to a self-study Skill Builder program between sessions
- Free consultation before purchase
Tradeoffs
- Highest published hourly rate on this list ($200 an hour on the 5-hour package)
- Payment due in full at registration
- Tutoring page names LD and PF; other formats need confirming
- A block of hours, rather than an ongoing weekly coaching relationship by default
Format: 1-on-1 online via Zoom; year-round
Pricing: 5 hours $1,000; 10 hours $1,800 (published)
Team + private coaching
The Argument Institute
Best for: Students who want a year-long team program with discounted private sessions on top, across LD, PF, Policy, Parliamentary, Big Questions or Congress.
The Argument Institute, founded by Stephen Scopa and Spencer Orlowski, coaches Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, Policy, Parliamentary, Big Questions and Congressional Debate from first-year students to national-circuit competitors. Its year-long program for the August 2026 to June 2027 season is published at $3,500 a year and includes live group classes, Slack access and weekly prep, with private sessions discounted to $50 an hour for team members. Families outside the program can buy a 10-session package for $1,000. Weekly classes and most private sessions run online over Zoom.
It suits a student who wants both a team and a coach without stitching them together. The tradeoff is that the best rate depends on the annual team commitment, and its headline results (national champions, college admissions) are its own claims. For a family that wants private coaching only, the per-session rate outside the team is $100.
Strengths
- Wide format coverage, including Big Questions and Congress
- Published season price and private-session rates
- Team classes and private coaching under one roof
- Free consultation offered
Tradeoffs
- The $50 hourly rate requires the $3,500 year-long program
- Private-only families pay $1,000 for 10 sessions
- Results and outcome figures are self-reported
- Group classes are a large share of what the annual price buys
Format: Online team classes plus 1-on-1 sessions; first-year to national circuit
Pricing: $3,500/year team program; $50/hr private for members; $1,000 for 10 sessions otherwise (published)
Marketplace
Wyzant
Best for: Families who want to choose an individual debate coach by profile, specialty and hourly rate, and pay lesson by lesson.
Wyzant is a tutoring marketplace where independent tutors set their own rates. Its debate category lists over a hundred debate tutors, with online and in-person options, and states that debate tutors cost $35 to $60 an hour on average. There are no packages or upfront fees, and the first hour with a new tutor is covered by its Good Fit Guarantee: if you are not satisfied, you do not pay.
That flexibility is the appeal and the risk. Listings range from coaches who specialize in debate to general tutors who list it among many subjects. There is no shared curriculum, no format matching and no continuity guarantee, so the quality of the season depends entirely on the profile you pick. Read a tutor’s competitive and coaching history closely, and ask which format and circuit they know.
Strengths
- Pay per lesson with no package or upfront fee
- Wide choice of individual coaches and rates
- First-hour Good Fit Guarantee
- Online or in-person, depending on the tutor
Tradeoffs
- Quality varies by tutor; no shared method or curriculum
- You do the vetting and the format matching yourself
- Debate is one of many subjects some tutors list
- No team, tournament support or evidence resources
Format: Marketplace of independent tutors; online or in-person
Pricing: Set by each tutor; Wyzant shows $35 to $60/hr on average for debate
Parliamentary focus
Debate Camp (online coaching)
Best for: Middle and high schoolers in parliamentary-style debate who want a short, levelled block of 1-on-1 sessions.
Debate Camp is a Halifax, Nova Scotia based organization known for summer camps in parliamentary debate, Model UN and public speaking. It also runs year-round online 1-on-1 coaching for middle and high school students at three published levels, each five weekly hour-long sessions: Beginner at US$350, Intermediate at US$500 and Advanced at US$625, the upper two adding a 15-minute goal-setting interview. It lists advanced coaches as having national-level debate team experience.
It is a clean, low-commitment option for parliamentary debaters. It is the wrong fit for a Public Forum or Lincoln-Douglas competitor, since its named formats are parliamentary debate, public speaking and Model UN, and five-session blocks suit a focused push more than a full season of topic prep.
Strengths
- Published prices in US and Canadian dollars
- Short five-session blocks keep the commitment small
- Levelled from beginner to advanced
- Strong fit for parliamentary-style debaters
Tradeoffs
- Named formats are parliamentary debate, public speaking and Model UN; no PF or LD focus
- Five-session blocks, so ongoing season prep means rebuying
- Camp-first organization; coaching is a smaller part of what it does
- No trial policy published
Format: 1-on-1 online; middle and high school
Pricing: US$350 / $500 / $625 per 5-session block (published)
How we evaluate
We review every program against the same criteria, so you can compare them on the things that actually change a student's results:
A note on who publishes this. TalkMaze publishes these reviews, and TalkMaze is one of the options we cover. We hold every program to the same criteria above, use only publicly verifiable information, and clearly separate fact from our editorial opinion. Where we think TalkMaze fits a family better, we say why, and where another option fits better, we say that too.
Why families choose TalkMaze
Every option above is a real choice for the right debater. Here is the case for TalkMaze on the criteria this guide uses: format matching, live-topic prep, coach continuity, and what you commit before the first session.
A dedicated coach, every week
The same coach builds a real relationship with your child, so progress compounds instead of resetting between one-off classes.
Personalized 1-on-1 coaching
Every session is one student and one coach, so all the speaking time and all the feedback go to your child.
A structured communication curriculum
Six levels from Explorer to Legend give a clear path, rather than a patchwork of unrelated classes.
Public speaking, debate, storytelling, and critical thinking
One coordinated program develops the whole communicator, not a single isolated skill.
Feedback and progress tracked over time
Coaches track fillers, eye contact, structure, and delivery, so "be more confident" turns into specific things a student can do.
A free assessment to start
A coach meets your child, finds their level, and recommends a plan before you commit.
TalkMaze offers 1-on-1 online public speaking and debate coaching for students ages 5 to 17.
Founder Ghalia Aamer is a national debate competitor, TEDx speaker, and Princess Diana Award recipient, and every coach is trained on the method she built.
The bottom line
Start from what your student needs this season. A national-circuit LD or PF debater chasing bids will find DebateDrills the most specialized. A family that wants to buy a defined block of hours from camp faculty has NSD. A student who wants a team and a coach in one annual package has The Argument Institute. A family comfortable vetting tutors itself can find good individual coaches on Wyzant. For most competing students, though, the fastest improvement comes from one private coach who knows their format, preps against the resolution in front of them, and stays with them across the season. That is the case for 1-on-1 coaching, and it is what TalkMaze does.
Two categories we left off the ranked list. Summer camps such as the Victory Briefs Institute (in-person LD, PF and World Schools sessions at university campuses) and Capitol Debate (camps at university campuses plus online options) are strong for an intensive burst, but they are seasonal. Our guide to debate camps covers them. Your student’s school team coach is the other: they run the team and the tournament calendar, and private coaching works best alongside them, filling the individual time a team coach cannot give every debater.
Hire for format knowledge, live-topic prep and continuity, and watch one session before you buy a season. Every option above tells you plainly who it is built for.
The surest way to compare any of these against 1-on-1 coaching is to watch your own student in one free session.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best private debate coaching for a student who competes?
For most competing students, the best private debate coaching is a single 1-on-1 coach who knows their format and preps against the live resolution, which is what TalkMaze provides, starting with a free 30-minute session. For a national-circuit LD or PF debater chasing bids, DebateDrills is the most specialized option. NSD sells fixed blocks of hours from its camp faculty, and The Argument Institute pairs a year-long team with discounted private sessions.
How much does a private debate coach cost?
Published private debate coaching rates on this list run from about $35 an hour on a marketplace to $300 a session for a company founder. Wyzant shows a $35 to $60 hourly average for debate tutors, DebateDrills publishes $90, $120 and $150 per session by tier, The Argument Institute charges $1,000 for 10 sessions outside its team program, and NSD charges $1,000 for 5 hours. TalkMaze publishes its membership rates at talkmaze.com/pricing. Always confirm session length and the minimum purchase.
Does my child need a private coach if they are already on the school debate team?
A private coach is how most competing students get the individual practice a team cannot give everyone. A school team coach runs practices, entries and the tournament calendar for the whole squad, so one debater rarely gets an hour of individual case work and rebuttal drilling each week. Private coaching works alongside the team: the team handles tournaments, the coach sharpens your student’s cases, crossfire and weighing for the next round.
Should a Public Forum or Lincoln-Douglas debater look for a format specialist?
Yes, your student should work with a coach who knows their format well, because PF and LD are judged differently. NSDA describes Public Forum as a two-on-two event whose resolutions change through the season, and Lincoln-Douglas as a one-on-one event centered on values, philosophy and justice. Case structure, speech times and what wins the judge differ between them, so ask any coach which formats and circuits they have competed in or coached.
How often do debate topics change, and why does it matter for coaching?
NSDA Lincoln-Douglas topics change every two months, and Public Forum topics run two months each for the first two periods and then change monthly. That means a coaching plan that is not tied to the current resolution goes stale within weeks. Good private coaching builds and stress-tests cases for both sides of whatever topic your student is debating next.
Can a beginner start with private debate coaching?
Yes, and a first-year debater often gains the most from it, because 1-on-1 sessions cover fundamentals at the student’s own pace before habits set. Some competitive programs are built for experienced circuit debaters, so check who a program is designed for. TalkMaze coaches first-year debaters as readily as varsity competitors and starts with beginner-friendly formats before adding technical ones.
Is online debate coaching as effective as in-person?
Yes, for private coaching online works well, and most specialist debate coaches now work over video. Video sessions also widen the pool of coaches who know your student’s exact format. In-person summer camps add an intensive, social burst, but year-round case prep and drilling fit naturally into weekly online sessions.
Does TalkMaze send students to tournaments?
No. TalkMaze students compete through their own school or club team, which handles tournaments and registration. TalkMaze provides the private 1-on-1 coaching that helps them perform when they get there, tied to the motions they will actually debate. TalkMaze offers 1-on-1 online public speaking and debate coaching for students ages 5 to 17, with a free 30-minute first session.
