Buyer’s guide
The Best Interview Prep for Students
Seven real ways to prepare a student for a private school, boarding school, selective program, college or scholarship interview, compared on the same criteria. We state only facts each provider publishes, we say where pricing is not public, and we disclose that TalkMaze is our own.
The interview is the one part of a private school application a student has to deliver live. Test scores arrive on a report, essays can be redrafted, and recommendations are written by someone else. In the interview, a 12-year-old sits across from an admissions officer, or a camera, and has to answer "Why our school?" in their own words, then handle a follow-up they did not expect.
Search for "private school interview prep" or "ISEE and SSAT interview coaching" and most results are admissions consultancies describing their own packages, often without a price. That is fine, and some are excellent, but it leaves a parent comparing very different things: a full-service consultant, a test-prep company with an interview add-on, a tutor marketplace, a self-paced course and speaking coaching. This guide puts them side by side on the same criteria.
Two disclosures up front. TalkMaze is our program, and it is on this list, labeled as ours and held to the same criteria. And we quote a price only where the provider publishes one. Where pricing is not public, we say so.
An admissions interview tests two things at once: whether the student has something real to say, and whether they can say it clearly to a stranger under mild pressure. Most interview prep works on the first. The best prep works on both, with mock interviews run by someone the student does not already know.
TalkMaze — best for most families who want a student to walk into an admissions interview composed and specific, with 1-on-1 mock interviews and a coach who builds the speaking skill underneath, ages 5 to 17
- Best full-service boarding school advising: ConnectPrep
- Best for NYC families and young applicants: Bright Kids
- Cheapest structured start: Test Innovators Admissions Assist
How we picked
- Built for student applicants. Every option here prepares students for school, program, college or scholarship interviews. We left out services aimed only at job seekers.
- Real mock interviews or structured interview practice. Advice articles alone did not qualify as a pick, though we list the best free ones in the bottom line.
- Only publicly verifiable facts. Every claim about a provider comes from its own website. We quote a price only where the provider publishes one, and say "not public" where it does not.
- Judged on fit. We compare format (1-on-1, course, consultancy), ages, online availability and cost transparency, because the right answer depends on the student and the school.
- An honest "wrong for" on every pick, including ours.
- No outcome claims. We do not repeat acceptance-rate claims as fact, and we make none for TalkMaze. No interview coach can promise an admission.

The programs, ranked
1-on-1 coaching
TalkMaze
Best for: Students 5 to 17 with an interview ahead who need to sound composed, specific and like themselves, and families who want the speaking skill to last past one admissions season.
TalkMaze coaches public speaking and debate 1-on-1 online, and for 16- and 17-year-olds, college and scholarship interview prep is one of the most common requests we get. When a student has an interview coming up, the coach builds a block of sessions around the date and rehearses the exact scenario: mock interviews, "tell me about yourself" until it sounds like a conversation, and the follow-up questions that catch students out. For students applying to UK independent schools, that includes 11-plus and independent-school interviews; for New Jersey families, the county-academy interviews.
Our case on this list comes down to the second half of the takeaway above. Many students have a good answer to "Why this school?" and still deliver it in a rush, look at the table, or freeze on the follow-up. Those are speaking problems, and they are what our coaches work on every week: composure, structure, expanding a short answer with a specific example, and handling a question you did not see coming. Full disclosure: we publish this guide, so we have held our entry to the same criteria as the rest.
Where we are the wrong call: TalkMaze is not a private school admissions consultancy. We do not build a school list for independent or boarding school applicants, run SSAT or ISEE test prep, or manage the application. If you want one firm to handle all of that, a full-service consultant like ConnectPrep or Bright Kids is the better fit, and some families pair one with our coaching for the interview itself.
Strengths
- Every session is 1-on-1, so the student does all the talking and gets all the feedback
- Mock interviews rehearse the real format, including follow-up questions
- Works on delivery as well as content: pace, eye contact, filler words, composure
- Same coach every week, so preparation builds on itself
- Online, ages 5 to 17, with a free 30-minute assessment before any commitment
Tradeoffs
- Not an admissions consultancy: no school list, test prep or application management for private school applicants
- 1-on-1 coaching costs more than a self-paced course
- Online only, so no in-person practice in an office setting
- We make no admissions outcome claims, and no honest coach can
Format: 1-on-1 online, ages 5 to 17
Pricing: Packages listed at talkmaze.com/pricing; free 30-minute assessment
Full-service admissions advising
ConnectPrep
Best for: Families applying to competitive private or boarding schools who want one firm to run the whole process, interview included.
ConnectPrep is a Westport, Connecticut firm whose private and boarding school advising covers school selection, application strategy, essays, SSAT, ISEE and HSPT test prep, and interview coaching. Its interview coaching is described as structured mock interviews with real-time feedback, including multiple full-length mock sessions, coaching on communication, eye contact and presence, and school-specific preparation. Sessions run in person across parts of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, and online.
The tradeoff is the one that comes with any full-service consultancy. Pricing is not published; ConnectPrep says it depends on the program, the instructor and whether sessions are in person or online, and is set after a free consultation. If the interview is the only gap, you may be paying for a process you do not need.
Strengths
- Interview prep sits inside full school-list, essay and test-prep advising
- Multiple full-length mock interviews with real-time feedback
- School-specific interview preparation
- In person in parts of CT, NY and NJ, plus online
Tradeoffs
- Pricing not public; set after a consultation
- More than you need if the interview is the only gap
- In-person sessions limited to its regional markets
Format: 1:1 advising, private and boarding school applicants; in person (CT, NY, NJ) or online
Pricing: Not public; quoted after a free consultation
NYC admissions consulting
Bright Kids
Best for: New York City families, especially those applying for kindergarten and the early grades, who want help with the student interview, the parent interview and playdate-style assessments.
Bright Kids is an NYC admissions consultancy and tutoring firm with an Upper East Side office. Its admissions consulting includes mock interviews for both students and parents and playdate preparation for young children, alongside school lists, essay support and test prep for exams including the ISEE, SSAT and SHSAT. It also serves families in Connecticut, New Jersey, Chicago, D.C., Los Angeles and abroad, with tutoring available virtually.
The specialty is the strength and the limit. For a five-year-old facing a group playdate, or parents facing their own interview, few options here are as focused. For a high school junior preparing for a scholarship panel, a speaking coach or a broader consultancy will fit better. Pricing is not published on its site.
Strengths
- Mock interviews for students and for parents
- Playdate preparation for the youngest applicants
- Deep focus on NYC independent, public and gifted program admissions
- Remote options for families outside New York
Tradeoffs
- Pricing not public
- NYC-centred; less relevant to boarding or college interviews
- Interview work sits inside a broader consulting and tutoring offer
Format: Consulting and tutoring, elementary through high school; NYC office plus virtual
Pricing: Not public
Interview training program
Advantage Testing Interview Training
Best for: Families who want a dedicated interview-training program that covers middle school, high school and college interviews, in person or over Zoom.
Advantage Testing runs a dedicated interview training program for applicants to middle and high schools, colleges, graduate schools and jobs. It covers interviewing technique, including verbal and nonverbal communication, then mock interviews with a review of organization, focus, responsiveness, tone, pacing and nonverbal communication, followed by personalized recommendations. It runs in person at locations in many US cities, the United Kingdom and France, and online over Zoom.
It is one of the few programs here built specifically around the interview, and the review criteria it publishes are the right ones. Pricing is not listed on its site, and the page does not describe its counselors’ backgrounds, so ask both before you book.
Strengths
- A program built specifically for interviews
- Covers school, college and later interviews, so it can grow with a student
- Published review criteria: organization, focus, tone, pacing, nonverbal
- In person in many US cities, the UK and France, or on Zoom
Tradeoffs
- Pricing not public
- Counselor backgrounds not described on the program page
- Interview-only scope; the underlying speaking skill gets less ongoing work
Format: Mock interviews and training, middle school through professional; in person or Zoom
Pricing: Not public
Test prep with interview coaching
AJ Tutoring
Best for: Bay Area families applying to private middle and high schools who want a short, defined interview block alongside entrance-exam prep.
AJ Tutoring, which lists more than a dozen San Francisco Bay Area centers, offers interview coaching for private middle and high school applicants. It says students typically work with a tutor for four sessions, covering the kinds of questions private school interviewers have asked in past years, how to present themselves, and mock interviews with feedback. It pairs naturally with its ISEE, SSAT and HSPT prep and writing-sample coaching.
A defined four-session block is useful when the interview date is close. For a student who freezes or rambles, four sessions may be enough to learn the questions and not enough to change how they come across. Pricing is not listed on its site.
Strengths
- Clear, short scope: typically four sessions
- Mock interviews with feedback, built on past interview questions
- Bundles easily with entrance-exam and writing-sample prep
Tradeoffs
- Pricing not public
- Bay Area-focused
- A short block suits a near deadline more than a student who needs real speaking growth
Format: 1-on-1 tutoring, private middle and high school applicants
Pricing: Not public
1-on-1 tutor marketplace
Wyzant
Best for: Hands-on parents who want to hire an individual interview or speaking tutor by the hour and are comfortable vetting that person themselves.
Wyzant is a marketplace of independent tutors who set their own hourly rates. You browse and hire a tutor directly, arrange 1-on-1 lessons online or in person, and pay per lesson plus a 9% student service fee. If the first lesson is not a good fit, Wyzant can refund the first hour under its Good Fit Guarantee.
The flexibility comes with work for the parent. There is no admissions-interview curriculum, so quality and approach depend on the tutor you choose, and tutors are not required to have a background check unless a student or parent purchases one. Fine for a specific, time-bound goal; less natural for a younger student who needs a structured, vetted program.
Strengths
- Pay as you go, no package commitment
- You choose the exact tutor and can compare rates
- First-hour Good Fit Guarantee
Tradeoffs
- No standard curriculum; quality depends on the tutor
- Background checks are not required unless a parent buys one
- You do the vetting and planning yourself
Format: 1-on-1 tutoring, all ages, online or in person
Pricing: Each tutor sets an hourly rate, plus a 9% service fee
Self-paced course
Test Innovators Admissions Assist
Best for: Families who want a low-cost, structured introduction to the private school interview, for the student and the parent, before deciding on live help.
Admissions Assist, from Test Innovators, is a set of three activity-based online courses with Middle Level (applying to grades 5 to 8) and Upper Level (grades 9 to 12) versions. The Interview Prep course covers what to expect and practice with common questions, and a separate Parent Roadmap course includes common parent interview questions. Each course is $40, or $99 for all three, with a 12-month license.
It is the most transparent price on this list and a sensible first step. What it cannot do is sit across from your student, ask a follow-up and tell them how they came across. Live mock interviews are not mentioned on the course page, so plan on live practice with someone outside the family as well.
Strengths
- Published pricing: $40 per course or $99 for three
- Covers the parent side of the interview too
- Separate versions for grades 5-8 and 9-12 applicants
Tradeoffs
- Self-paced; no live mock interview mentioned
- No feedback on how the student actually sounds
- Private school focus; not built for college or scholarship interviews
Format: Self-paced online course, applicants to grades 5 to 12 and their parents
Pricing: $40 per course; $99 for all three (12-month license)
How we evaluate
We review every program against the same criteria, so you can compare them on the things that actually change a student's results:
A note on who publishes this. TalkMaze publishes these reviews, and TalkMaze is one of the options we cover. We hold every program to the same criteria above, use only publicly verifiable information, and clearly separate fact from our editorial opinion. Where we think TalkMaze fits a family better, we say why, and where another option fits better, we say that too.
Why families choose TalkMaze
Every option above has a real use. Here is the case for TalkMaze on the same criteria, and the specific situations where a consultant or a course is the better call.
A dedicated coach, every week
The same coach builds a real relationship with your child, so progress compounds instead of resetting between one-off classes.
Personalized 1-on-1 coaching
Every session is one student and one coach, so all the speaking time and all the feedback go to your child.
A structured communication curriculum
Six levels from Explorer to Legend give a clear path, rather than a patchwork of unrelated classes.
Public speaking, debate, storytelling, and critical thinking
One coordinated program develops the whole communicator, not a single isolated skill.
Feedback and progress tracked over time
Coaches track fillers, eye contact, structure, and delivery, so "be more confident" turns into specific things a student can do.
A free assessment to start
A coach meets your child, finds their level, and recommends a plan before you commit.
TalkMaze offers 1-on-1 online public speaking and debate coaching for students ages 5 to 17.
Founder Ghalia Aamer is a national debate competitor, TEDx speaker, and Princess Diana Award recipient, and every coach is trained on the method she built.
The bottom line
Match the prep to the gap. If you want one firm to run a private or boarding school application from school list to interview, a full-service consultant like ConnectPrep fits. If you are in New York with a young applicant or a parent interview ahead, Bright Kids specializes in exactly that. If you want a dedicated interview program at several levels, Advantage Testing offers one. If the budget is tight, Admissions Assist is a structured $40 start. If your student knows what to say and still loses it in the room, that is a speaking problem, and 1-on-1 coaching with mock interviews is how it gets fixed.
Use the free material too. The Association of Boarding Schools explains what the admissions interview is for, BoardingSchoolReview.com publishes a detailed interview guide (it notes interviews typically run 30 to 60 minutes and are increasingly virtual for international applicants), and Test Innovators’ free article covers common questions. Read them with your student. Then make sure they rehearse out loud with someone who is not a parent, because reading about an interview and answering a stranger’s follow-up are different skills.
The students who interview well know their own stories, have researched the school, and have practiced answering out loud with someone they do not know. Pick the prep that covers whichever of those three your student is missing.
The surest way to compare any of these against 1-on-1 coaching is to watch your own student in one free session.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best interview prep for a private school applicant?
For most students, the best interview prep is 1-on-1 mock interviews with someone outside the family, followed by specific feedback on both the answers and the delivery. TalkMaze offers 1-on-1 online public speaking and debate coaching for students ages 5 to 17, and builds a block of mock interviews around a student’s real interview date. If you want a firm to run the whole application, full-service consultants such as ConnectPrep or Bright Kids include interview prep, and Test Innovators’ Admissions Assist is a low-cost self-paced start.
How do I prepare my child for a school interview?
Prepare real stories, research the school, and rehearse out loud with an adult your student does not know well. Oriel Admissions, a private school consultancy, recommends preparing five or six real experiences (a project, a book, a setback, a responsibility) and running three or four realistic mock interviews spaced over several weeks, and warns that memorized answers read poorly. Work on the basics too: eye contact, a clear greeting, fewer filler words, and a couple of genuine questions to ask the interviewer.
What do private and boarding school interviewers look for?
Interviewers want to learn who the student is beyond the transcript: their interests, how they think, how they communicate and whether they would add to the school community. BoardingSchoolReview.com lists curiosity, resilience, community mindset, independence and authenticity as the qualities boarding school interviewers assess. A student who can give specific examples and ask real questions about the school shows all of these.
How long is a private school admissions interview?
A typical boarding school admissions interview lasts 30 to 60 minutes, according to BoardingSchoolReview.com, and may be on campus, over video, with an alumnus, or in a group. Independent day school interviews are usually a one-on-one conversation with an admissions officer, in person or virtual, covering academic interests, activities and goals, with time for the student to ask questions. Check the school’s admissions page, since format and length vary.
Is interview coaching worth it?
Yes, for most students it is worth it, because an interview is a live performance and the fastest way to improve a live performance is practice with expert feedback. A parent can help with research and stories, but students tend to answer a parent differently from a stranger, and few parents can coach pacing, structure and composure in the moment. Even a short block of mock interviews before the date gives a student a real rehearsal.
Does ISEE or SSAT prep include interview prep?
Sometimes. Some firms bundle interview coaching with entrance-exam prep (AJ Tutoring and ConnectPrep both offer it), while others focus on the test itself. Ask directly whether the package includes live mock interviews with feedback, and how many.
When should a student start preparing for an admissions interview?
In our experience, four to six weeks before the interview is enough for focused preparation, if your student is nervous with adults or tends to give one-word answers. Students who need to change how they come across, as well as what they say, benefit from a longer runway of weekly practice.
Can the same coaching help with college and scholarship interviews later?
Yes. College and scholarship interviews reward the same skills as a school admissions interview: telling your own story clearly, expanding a short answer with a specific example, and staying composed on a surprise question. TalkMaze coaches students through high school on exactly these, including mock college and scholarship interviews; see our high school program.
