Ask a Coach · Getting started with coaching
My child has a big speech in two weeks. Is that enough time for coaching to help?

The short answer
Yes. Two weeks is enough to make a clear difference to one specific speech: a stronger structure, a memorable opening and ending, and several realistic run-throughs with feedback. It is too little time to change a student's overall confidence, so aim the sessions squarely at this one speech.
Short-deadline coaching works because the goal is narrow. The coach does not have to build every skill; they have to make this speech clear and give your child enough practice that delivering it feels familiar. Here is roughly how three or four sessions over two weeks get used:
- Session 1: structure. Cut the draft to its main point and two or three supports, write an opening that earns attention and an ending that lands. Many school speeches improve most at this stage.
- Session 2: delivery. Stand up, run it, and work on pace, pauses and eye contact. Turn the script into a cue card.
- Session 3: pressure. Full run-throughs with small surprises: a distraction, a lost line, a question. Rehearse the recovery.
- Session 4 (optional): polish. One or two final runs a few days out, then leave it alone.
Between sessions, your child should do two or three standing run-throughs at home in front of someone. The night before should be one calm run and an early bedtime.
Speeches this works well for
If the text is written and you mainly want an expert read of it, a written Speech Review is a lighter option. If your child needs to practice delivering it, live sessions are the better fit.
How a coach works on this
TalkMaze coaches regularly prepare students for dated events like election speeches, bar and bat mitzvah speeches and interviews. Book the free assessment, tell us the date, and the coach will plan the sessions backward from it.
TalkMaze offers 1-on-1 online public speaking and debate coaching for students ages 5 to 17. Founder Ghalia Aamer is a national debate competitor, TEDx speaker, and Princess Diana Award recipient, and every coach is trained on the method she built.
Parents also ask
What if the speech is in less than a week?
One or two sessions can still help, focused on the opening, the ending and one full run-through with feedback. Keep changes small so your child is not relearning the speech days before.
Should the coach rewrite my child's speech?
No. A coach helps your child restructure and sharpen their own words. A speech in an adult's voice is harder for a student to deliver naturally, and teachers usually notice.
